LEADENDALE

Dr Plott in the late 1600 describes the mining of white earth in the Mear Heath area.
The white earth being Lead Carbonate, when crushed, washed, and ground to a powder,eg,in a mill, such as the mill at Moddershall, it would be taken to be smelted in a furnace that existed in the area of woodland between Lightwood road and Sandon road. Continued.

As the Cerusite (lead carbonate) is highly poisonous it required a very long condensing flue
topped up with a high industral type chimney.
I have done building work where the chimney once stood, and the flue is still there for inspection
if required,it is also shown on local maps as a ventilation shaft. The resulting lead from the furnace would be processed to extract any silver etc.then used for paint, glaze for the pottery industry, putty manufacture etc etc.
